The Biggest Mistake Practice Owners Are Making
When most people think about AI, they focus on how to use it inside their business.
That’s important. I use AI constantly. It helps me create content, organize ideas, improve systems, and make better decisions faster, and coach my administrator to increase conversions over the phone.
But what many practice owners aren’t thinking about is that AI is also solving problems that used to require a professional. Every time someone asks ChatGPT about shoulder pain, back pain, running injuries, or rehab exercises, they’re getting answers that are leading many people to never contact a clinic.
I’m not saying AI is replacing healthcare professionals tomorrow. I’m saying that ignoring this shift would be a mistake.
The practices that thrive in the future will not only have to use AI, they’ll have to figure out how to offer something AI can’t easily replicate.
Human Connection Is Becoming More Valuable
Once you accept that AI is getting better at delivering information, the next question becomes: what can it not do particularly well?
The answer, at least for now, is genuine human connection.
Patients don’t just pay for information. They pay for trust. They pay for accountability. They pay for confidence. They pay for the feeling that someone understands their situation and is invested in helping them succeed.
That’s why I think many practice owners are asking the wrong question. Instead of asking how to compete with AI, ask yourself how to create a more human-to-human experience.
What does your patient experience feel like? How well does your team communicate? Are they rushed, or do they have time for deep conversations and interactions? How much trust are you building during every interaction? Are you coaching them on how to develop all the above?
Those things are becoming increasingly valuable.

Community May Become Your Greatest Competitive Advantage
One thing I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is community.
Most practice owners focus on attracting patients one at a time. But what if you became the center of a community instead?
Imagine hosting quarterly events for runners, golfers, pickleball players, active adults, or whatever niche you serve. Imagine creating a place where people learn, connect, and build relationships around a shared interest.
AI can answer questions. It can provide information and create customized recommendations.
What it can’t do is create real relationships between people.
That’s why I think community-building may become one of the most powerful business strategies available to practice owners over the next several years. It creates loyalty, strengthens referrals, and gives people a reason to stay connected to your practice beyond a single injury or episode of care.
Build for Where Things Are Going
One of the most important habits any business owner can develop is learning to think a few years ahead.
Too many practices build systems, services, and marketing strategies based entirely on today’s market. The problem is that technology is changing so quickly that today’s advantage can disappear much faster than it used to.
When I’m evaluating a new idea now, I’m constantly asking myself: will this still be valuable when AI becomes dramatically better than it is today?
