Ever finish a discovery visit or evaluation feeling confident you can help someone, only to hear, “I need to think about it”?

You might assume you need a better closing script or a stronger way to explain why your care is worth the investment.

But here’s what I tell the practice owners I coach: The close happens long before you ask someone to book.

In this episode, I walk through a real coaching conversation that turns into a mini masterclass on converting more discovery visits and evaluations into paying patients.

And if you want to take your conversions to the next level, my Cash-Pay Conversion Summit is coming up November 13–14 in Austin, Texas. We’ll spend two days practicing the phone scripts and conversion systems that help you turn more of your existing leads into paying patients.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why the first 80% of your evaluation matters more than the final five minutes
  • How to uncover the deeper emotional reasons patients want to get better
  • What to carry over from the initial phone call into the evaluation
  • How to build confidence in your treatment plan throughout the visit
  • How to handle price objections without immediately discounting your services
  • Why practicing your consultation scripts is essential to improving conversions

Your Close Starts Before You Ask for the Sale

One of my Mastermind member, wanted to get better at explaining why his services were worth paying out of pocket for.

But I challenged that thinking.

You shouldn’t need to spend the last five minutes convincing someone that your practice is worth the price. The conversations you’ve had throughout the visit should have already helped them understand the value.

That’s why I tell clinicians to focus on what happens during the first 80–90% of the evaluation, not just what they’ll say at the end.

Don’t Stop at the Patient’s Functional Goals

Let’s say your patient has knee, hip, and back pain. They want to walk longer, climb stairs, and get back to cycling.

Those are important goals. But they’re not necessarily the reasons they’ll say yes to treatment.

In this case, his patient was a 64-year-old nurse who was concerned about losing her ability to work.

That’s where I encouraged him to dig deeper. Was she worried about her income? Did she love helping patients? Was there something else about her work that she couldn’t imagine losing?

You can’t assume you know the answer.

This is one of the most important parts of the conversion process…

…and it’s also one of the most commonly missed.

Find the Why That Changes Everything

I got emotional during this episode because I shared my own example.

These days, one of my biggest motivations for staying strong and getting treatment is being able to lift and care for my children as they grow.

That’s worth far more to me than simply getting rid of some back pain.

And that’s the point!

Your patients have their own deeply personal reasons for wanting to get better, but they may never tell you unless you ask.

When you connect their treatment plan to something that truly matters to them, the conversation about investing in care becomes very different.

Build Trust Throughout the Evaluation

Once you understand what matters most to your patient, your job is to connect the assessment to those goals.

As you identify the problems contributing to their symptoms, explain what you’re finding and how those issues relate to what they want to achieve.

When appropriate, share relevant patient success stories or demonstrate how treatment can improve their movement or symptoms.

You’re helping them recognize that you understand their problem, have a plan to address it, and can explain why that plan makes sense.

This is also why I encourage clinicians to study and repeatedly practice the consultation scripts inside Cash-Based Practice Freedom e-Course 2.0. Knowing what to communicate is important, but being able to do it naturally during an evaluation takes repetition.

Make the Final Ask Simple

By the time you recommend a plan of care, your patient should understand what needs to improve, why it matters, and how you can help.

Then the actual close can be surprisingly simple.

Explain your recommendation, ask how it sounds, and give them room to respond.

If they have concerns about cost or commitment, address those concerns rather than immediately trying to justify your prices.

In the episode, I also explain how to present different payment options and use the feel, felt, found approach when someone is hesitant about the investment.

The Final Word

Getting more yeses from your discovery visits and evaluations isn’t about becoming a better salesperson.

It’s about becoming better at understanding what truly matters to your patients and helping them see how your care can get them there.

And remember, that process starts before they ever walk into your clinic.

That’s why I’m putting so much emphasis on the Cash-Pay Conversion Summit, November 13–14, 2026, in Austin, Texas.

We’ll work on the phone conversations, scripts, role-playing, and team training that help more prospective patients confidently take that first step into your practice.

Improving conversions means generating more revenue from leads you’ve already worked hard to attract, without needing to spend more on marketing.
