If you ever offer free consultations or “discovery visits” in your practice, you’d be crazy not to listen to this episode.

Have you ever offered a free consultation, only to realize the person was really just looking for a few free exercises or stretches, with zero intention of becoming a patient?

If you have enough of those experiences, you might start wondering whether free consultations are even worth offering.

But don’t eliminate them just yet…

In this episode, I share a coaching conversation from my Cash-Based Practice Mastermind about identifying potential tire kickers, setting expectations on the phone to “weed them out,” and the best time and method to offer free consultations so you convert more prospective patients without wasting your team’s time.

And if you want some of the exact scripts I use to convert more consultations into paying patients, scroll down to grab my free resource: Cash-Pay Consultation Closing Scripts.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • How to identify callers who may only want free advice
  • What to say when someone seems unlikely to commit to treatment after a free consult.
  • How to pre-frame free consultation clients on the phone so they are most likely to convert it to paying customers
  • Why you shouldn’t offer everyone a free consultation
  • How to offer both free and paid appointment options, so only those who truly need a free visit in order to decide to become a patient, actually ask for them.
  • Why ‘selling’ too much, too soon can hurt conversions

How to Identify the Tire Kickers

When someone calls asking for a free consultation, I don’t recommend immediately running through a list of questions to determine whether they’re serious.

Instead, listen for clues.

Maybe they ask whether they’ll get exercises to take home. Or they mention that they just want to figure out what’s wrong and try fixing it themselves.

That’s when I’d start asking questions about how important it is for them to actually reach the goals they’ve described.

The key is knowing when to have that conversation without making a genuinely interested patient feel like they’re being interrogated.

Set Expectations Before the Free Consult

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is letting people assume they’ll receive treatment or a home exercise program during their free consultation.

At my practice, that’s not what these visits are for.

They’re short appointments designed to determine whether we can help, answer questions, and give the prospective patient confidence about moving forward.

If someone only wants a few exercises, it’s better to clarify that on the phone than discover it after they’ve taken up your clinician’s time.

And if your team struggles with these conversations, that’s exactly the kind of problem we’ll be working on at the Cash-Pay Conversion Summit this November. We’ll practice the scripts and systems that help your team confidently convert more callers into paying patients.

Give Them Two Ways to Get Started

Here’s something I’ve found works extremely well.

Rather than automatically pushing everyone toward a free consultation, we generally offer two options after we’ve established that we’re confident we can help.

They can schedule a short, free discovery visit to make sure we’re a good fit. Or they can book a full paid evaluation and treatment session if they’re ready to get started.

This gives the prospective patient a chance to tell us where they are in their decision-making process.

Some people need that extra step before they’re comfortable committing. Others are ready to begin treatment immediately.

Don’t Try to Sell Too Much, Too Soon

Another mistake I see is trying to sell a large treatment package during a free consultation.

Sure, you might get some yeses. But how many people would have continued if you’d simply offered a smaller next step?

Think of it like dating. Someone who agrees to coffee probably isn’t ready to spend a weekend in Cabo with you.

The same principle applies to your patients.

If they needed a free consultation to feel comfortable moving forward, asking them to immediately commit thousands of dollars can be too big a leap for many patients…

… and though you may be successful in getting some people to say yes to packages at the end of free consultations, how many people said no because you tried to push them into too big of a price tag too early?

The Final Word

Free consultations can be a powerful conversion tool when they’re structured correctly.

The goal isn’t to give away as much as possible or push everyone into a paid appointment. It’s to help each prospective patient take the next step they’re ready for while protecting your team’s time.

And if you want to turn more of your existing leads into paying patients, I’d love to help you do that at the Cash-Pay Conversion Summit, November 13–14, 2026, in Austin, Texas.
