CBP 118: How to Coach Referral Sources on What to Tell Patients About Your Cash-Based Practice

This week’s highlights episode is taken from an interview with Michael Garrett, MD, an Austin-area “direct primary care” physician with a private medical practice near my own cash-based physical therapy clinic in Austin, Texas. As our interview began, we inadvertently recorded a great example of a conversation I like to have with all my physician referral sources. I find it really helps them better understand how my cash-based services can represent a much better value for many of their patients than insurance based options. And that prepares them to frame my services and the associated costs in an accurate, yet enticing way when the time comes.

This is a really quick listen that can help you see how to set up your referral sources to position your practice in the best light with their patients. Definitely worth a few minutes of your time!

This “highlight” is from a full episode on the direct primary-care movement in the US.

More specifically, we discuss these cash-based practice topics:

  • The approach I use to educate my referring physicians on how my cash-based practice can actually provide many of their patients better care at the same or lower out-of-pocket cost.
  • How my out-of-network practice answers the, “Do you take my insurance?” question so prospective patients understand how they might still get reimbursements for covered services.
  • Why high deductibles and large co-pays actually make cash-based services easier to sell.
  • How I make it quickly understandable the reasons my practice can often provide better care than the insurance-based clinics.
