Help us all brainstorm by sharing a business development task you’ll be doing (or suggest others try) in 2015. It can be anything, even small things, that will lead to new business for your practice in 2015 and beyond. If you’re feeling brave and want to make yourself publicly accountable, list a specific goal you have for 2015.
I plan to write all new referral sources a hand-written Thank You note after sending me their first referral.
Nice, Michelle! It will make a difference … just watch!
Good stuff, Jarod. When you desribed yourself as not being able to rejoice after each small accomplishment, always thinking ahead to the next goal, you also described myself! I enjoyed hearing the “win each day” approach and plan to implement it this year. It really is all about staying present and taking small steps each day towards what we hope to become. Keep up the great work. I look forward to reading/listening to more of your stuff in 2015!
Thanks Trent … Glad I could provide a different approach for us extreme type A’s 🙂 I appreciate the kind words and look forward to producing a lot of great content in 2015
Hi Jarod,
Thank you for your courage getting a new paradigm of PT practice out there. Your podcasts are great.
I have been a part time acute care practitioner for the last part of my 18 year career and was less confident in my therapy skills in outpatient private work. I really want to take the leap into solopreneur practice and have researched it as a hobby while raising my kids and working part time. Yet still searching for the best niche, right timing/location for my family and kahoonas. Listening to your interviews and insights gives perspective and optimism.
Happy New Year!
Thanks Mary! I’m so glad my work can be of help and inspiration.
Speaking of niche markets, I did a post a while back on topic you may want to check out:https://drjarodcarter.com/niche-pt-marketing-ideas/
Also, Aaron Lebauer did a recent post on the topic: http://lebauerconsulting.com/physical-therapy-narrow-deep-niche/
Thanks again for the kind words. Happy New Year!
Great insights on goal setting. Like you, I have always been a driven individual and I applaud you for tackling this topic that many PT’s tend to go short on because we all have so many things to juggle. We tend to start with a goal and yet we realize that after awhile, we lose the passion and fail to see the result. And guess what, the following year, we set the same goal yet again. here are a few things I practice:
1. Begin with the end in mind. Sure, we can live in the moment but as you said, have a bigger goal, and then break them down into a quarterly goal, then a monthly goal, and then weekly goal. I am a big fan of WEEKLY goal. I usually write down all the essential “To-DO’s” for the entire week (mind you that I do not schedule them per day unless I have already set them). I list them down and then each day I look at those and gradually scratch them off based on what I feel would work per day. That way, I can remain flexible without losing site of all those things I have set for that week.
2. Have a paper planner. Sure we can be all savvy with our smart phones. I usually type them in my iphone calendar and then I transfer them at home to my planner. I run two businesses out of my own home (one of them is the Physical Therapy practice I launched, thanks to your book). When tax season comes and you juist happened to be audited, wouldn’t you rather the IRS take the paper planner and not your laptop?
3. Read 30 minutes of PT-related literature every day and read 1 business book or personal growth book for another 30 minutes daily. Now this may seem like a chore but I usually include my lunch hour when I am reviewing a new PT study or a new technique I was trying to learn. In terms of reading a business book or personal growth book, I do love audiobooks and it allows me to listen and learn while commuting to work. Turn your car into a rolling university. Didn’t we learn in PT school back then that hearing something over and over again just makes it easy to remember like the lyrics to a song? I have a list of my favorite business and personal growth books and some of them include: The 21 irrefutable laws of leadership by John Maxwell, The 7 habits of highly effective people, Who moved my cheese?, The Success Principles (By Jack Canfield), Jab Jab Jab Right Hook (Gary Vaynerchuck), The Go Giver, The Alchemist, The Four Agreements. The list is endless.
Hope this helps the readers. I love your podcast and it helps my daily commute and I am fired up about our profession! Thanks again for what you do and HAPPY 2015!
thanks so much for the detailed comment, Mark! And congratulations on your home-based practice. So excited to hear that my book was a part of that accomplishment.
Awesome book list and goal list/approach.
Would love to hear more about your practice… maybe we can get you on the podcast?
Much gratitude for all of your hard work to help make our practice building a little easier. Your talk today about being present is not unlike the practice of yoga and meditation….our actions in this moment are the ones that carve out our future….it’s literally all we have, the past is the past and the future is unknown. Anyhow, have two things planning for early this year:
1. Making a recipe e-book based on anti-inflammatory diet to aide in healing, to put as a “gift” for those that sign up for my mailing list.
2. Plan on doing a pelvic floor 1 day workshop based on PT, therapeutic yoga and integrative nutrition.
Thanks again!
Oh, and wanted to share one of my favorite simple reads for daily practices to keep you on track, “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success,” by Deepak Chopra, http://www.amazon.com/The-Seven-Spiritual-Laws-Success/dp/1878424114 and one that I just read, “Finding Your Way in a Wild New World: Reclaim Your True Nature to Create the Life You Want,” by Martha Beck….ways to be more creative.
Sorry, one more goal to add:
3. Offering an inservice to the PT clinic I used to work for: topic Pelvic Floor Rehab. So they understand a bit more, but also know what I can offer and possibly refer out to me for their clients they don’t feel comfortable treating.
Don’t apologize! The more the better!
All three goals are awesome! Can you send me the the anti-inflammatory diet ebook and add me to your email list when it’s ready?
Sure thing! Mailing list is on already, will need to work on the ebook–thanks for the accountability.
You got it! What is your general timeframe for completion of the ebook?
Plan was to have it done by the end of February but that might be a bit tight if I want to make it the way I want to….I want to use it to give to clients as well as in my workshop.
Sounds good. Looking forward to it!
Well, I met all my goals for February, checked off the following: 1. Pelvic Floor inservice for my former colleagues. 2. Pelvic Floor Workshop for clients. 3. Anti-Inflam eBook—it’s not pro but it meets my needs as being a resource for clients.
You. Are. A. Champion! Where can we download a copy of your anti-inflam e-book?
Thanks, I didn’t think I would do it all….dealing with my own health challenges and taking on new consulting work…but somehow it all aligned. Took a bit to get it up on my contact page, but here it is http://mindbodymovement.org/contact/ Not loving how it delays a day to provide it to you once you sign up, but I’ll be talking to Constant Contact about that. Thanks for the accountability!
My pleasure!
Jarod,
I’m grateful for PTs like you. Thank you for the relevant content! Curious, reverse engineer approach… Gary Vayneerchuck? Anyways, goals!!
1. Stop multi-tasking 20 things at one time. This dilutes my efforts.
2. Create content organizer and diversify topics and mediums.
3. Contact my “niche” market and solve a problem for them. Ask what they want.
4. Take a physician office manager to lunch every other week.
5. Execute! Please hold me accountable
Thx
Great list! (Yes, I love Gary V, but didn’t get that approach specifically from him:-)
I think most people fall prey to the multi-tasking habit.
What is your “niche” and how do you plan to “ask them what they want”??
