We’ve all experienced it… You’re at a party, attending a networking event, or watching your kid’s game, when someone discovers what you do for a living. Before long they ask, “Can I ask you something about my shoulder?”

Most providers either start giving free advice or try to politely end the conversation. In this episode, I explain how to quickly and naturally guide these conversations toward a booked evaluation instead.

If you’re looking for more practical, proven strategies to consistently attract Cash-Pay patients, this is exactly why I created the Cash-Based Practice Marketing Intensive. It teaches my R.O.I. Marketing Method along with simple, AI-powered tools that help keep your phone ringing with qualified prospective patients on autopilot..

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why casual injury questions are often buying signals, not just someone looking for free advice.
  • The biggest mistake providers make during these conversations
  • How to guide someone toward an evaluation without sounding salesy
  • Why giving free advice usually hurts more than it helps

Stop Assuming They’re Just Looking for Free Advice

One of the biggest mindset shifts you can make is changing how you interpret these conversations.

Yes, some people simply want a quick answer. But I’ve found many are genuinely looking for someone they can trust to solve a problem that’s been bothering them. They just don’t know what the next step should be.

When you assume they’re only looking for something free, you’ll naturally try to end the conversation. When you recognize they’re looking for help, you begin asking better questions and creating an opportunity to serve them.

Don’t Solve the Wrong Problem

The instinct for most providers is to recommend a stretch, an exercise, a brace, etc.

It feels helpful, but it often delays the care the person actually needs.

As we all know, most problems involve several contributing factors, and addressing only one of them usually leads to temporary improvement at best. Instead of solving the problem, you’ve given them a reason to postpone getting the comprehensive care that will actually help.

Rather than trying to fix them in two minutes, help them understand why a complete evaluation is key to getting 100% better.

Turn the Conversation Into a Mini Discovery Session

Instead of jumping straight to advice, spend a minute learning about the problem.

Ask when it hurts, what activities they’re avoiding, what they’ve already tried, and what they’d love to get back to doing. Those questions shift the conversation away from symptoms and toward outcomes that matter to the person.

Once they’ve described how the injury is affecting their life, explain that you’ve already identified one or two likely contributors. Then let them know these types of problems almost always involve several pieces that need to be evaluated together.

Now the evaluation becomes the obvious next step instead of a sales pitch.

Make the Recommendation Clear

One mistake I see all the time is ending with something like, “Give me a call if you ever want to come in.”

That’s easy to ignore and rarely followed up on…

Instead, confidently recommend the next step. Explain why a comprehensive evaluation will identify everything contributing to the problem and create a plan to get them back to doing what they enjoy.

People appreciate clarity. When you believe the evaluation is what’s best for them, your recommendation feels helpful instead of pushy.

If you’d like to build this type of confidence into every patient conversation, I teach ALL the most communication strategies and scripts  in the Cash-Based Practice Freedom e-Course 2.0, where we cover everything from attracting leads to converting them into long-term patients, staff management, scaling and automating a cash practice..

Book While Motivation Is High

Once someone says they’re interested, don’t rely on them to call later.

Offer a couple of appointment times while you’re already talking. Even if you don’t have your scheduling software with you, you can reserve a spot on your calendar and complete the details afterward.

The easier you make it to take the next step, the more likely they are to follow through.

Start Looking Forward to These Conversations

Most providers see these interactions as interruptions…

I think they’re opportunities.

Someone trusted you enough to ask for your opinion. Instead of trying to solve their problem in two minutes , or viewing them as a tire kicker looking for free advice, use that moment to understand what’s limiting them, explain why a full evaluation matters, and confidently recommend the next step.

You’ll help more people, and you’ll grow your practice without ever feeling like you’re selling.

The Final Word

Growing a Cash-Based practice isn’t always about finding more leads. Sometimes it’s about recognizing the opportunities already in front of you.

The next time someone asks about an injury at the gym, on the pickleball court, or at a social gathering, don’t think of it as someone looking for free advice. Think of it as someone looking for the right guide.

Ask a few thoughtful questions, recommend the next step with confidence, and make it easy for them to book. Those small conversations often become some of your very best patients.
