Two cash-based practice owners walk into a bar …
And in this podcast episode you get to hear their conversation about hiring and training cash-practice staff and filling their schedules with private-pay patients.
I just recently gave a presentation at the Referral Ignition conference and it was an awesome experience. My presentation went very well but the biggest highlight for me was meeting the other practice owners, a number of whom were my podcast listeners and Cash-Practice Guidebook readers.
One of the many people I got to finally meet in person was Paul Gough from my podcast episodes 36 and 37. One afternoon, we found ourselves at the hotel bar watching football and I decided to record our conversation.
As I’ve been mentioning this year, I’ll soon be expanding my practice and this was a great opportunity to pick the brain of someone who has grown his cash-based practice to 4 busy clinics.
In this episode, Paul gives us really creative ways to search for staff without paying a huge percentage of salary to a recruiter/staffing agency, the technology and systems he uses for training staff and making his practice scalable, how he actually hires new grads in his cash-practice, and much more (full list below).
You’ll hear me mention Paul’s program, which I’ll be starting soon (as a student/attendee!). To clarify, I and a handful of other practice owners will participate in his 6-week New Patient Accelerator Program that begins on Tuesday November 3rd
I am so pumped to be a part of this program and if you really want to grow your referrals and have packed PT schedules (and/or add more staff) … join me! Let’s go through this course together and charge into 2016 with huge momentum! (Note: Paul will be doing this program in the future too, so if this one is sold out, you can certainly join a future program.)
We’ll be in a small group going through the 6 weekly trainings, interacting and collaborating via a private Facebook page, and holding each other accountable to ensure implementation and results.
Okay, back to today’s episode …
More specifically, we discuss these cash-based practice topics:
- How Paul developed his head office manager into someone who runs his practice when he’s gone for months at a time.
- How he minimizes staff turnover.
- How he is able to hire new grads for his cash-based practice.
- How to minimize customer push-back when you (the practice owner) want a patient to be seen by staff other than you (even if you’ve done the evaluation).
- Why patients “don’t want to see YOU for treatment” and what they actually want when they come to YOUR clinic.
- The specific systems and technologies he uses to train and communicate with his staff.
- Two brilliant methods he has his receptionists use to make patients feel really special and have a great experience.
- What he offers his website visitors in order to collect their contact information.
- An overview of what I’ll be learning by going through Paul’s program over the next couple months.

This was such a great talk! I’m actually expanding my practice as well and am moving to a larger space soon as well as going through a bit of a rebranding. This was perfect timing with creating structure and also regarding hiring staff. Jarod, good luck with your move! And Paul, I hope you have your 6 week program again and I’ll have to sign up for it then. Thanks again for all the great tips and advice…it’s great to listen to others experience and learn from it.
Congrats to you too Brenda! And I fully support you taking Paul’s course when he runs it again next year… We just finished our third module today and it is absolutely incredible. I have gone from worrying about filling my new therapists’ schedules to wondering if the space I just rented is going to be big enough for the next three years 🙂
