This week’s podcast guest is an integrative pain care specialist who had a 15-location private practice that was primarily cash-based… In New York City! The real estate costs of something like that alone make my eyes glaze over, but the fact that he and his business partners did it with very little insurance involvement takes it to a whole other level.
Joe Tatta began his career as a traditional physical therapist 25 years ago. His first job was at a costly NYC in-patient rehab facility that focused on chronic pain. Next, he spent 2 years working for an outpatient private practice that focused on stage performers. Armed with those experiences in wellness and rehab, he and some partners opened a cash-based private practice that was a mix of PT and personal training.
In time, the business expanded to include 15 locations, with a mix of cash-pay and insurance-based patients. This background laid the foundation for his interest in integrative pain care, and in 2015, he left the clinics behind to write a book on the topic.
In this interview, Joe explains how integrative pain care helps bring the kind of healing that was previously only available in a pricey in-patient setting. You’ll hear how this approach involves all facets of a patient’s life in their journey toward a pain-free future, including diet, lifestyle, work, family, and mindset… and how you can apply these powerful methods to your practice and get the type of elusive results in chronic pain that people will gladly go out-of-network to achieve.
More specifically, we discuss these cash-based practice topics:
- What an integrative pain care approach is and how it can help patients overcome chronic pain.
- How integrative pain care helps fill the gap created by the high cost of in-patient care vs. what patients can afford.
- The three main factors that contribute to better outcomes for patients with chronic pain.
- Which interventions have the greatest impact on patient pain.
- The clinical implications of the mind-body connection and how you can leverage your patient’s intrinsic rewards systems.
- Techniques for teaching patients how to manage their persistent thoughts about pain.
- How to help people implement mindfulness strategies to modify their behavior.
- A daily strategy you can use to develop greater empathy for your patients so you’ll become a more-effective therapist.
- How mindfulness can help you identify your own key performance indicators and how they are affecting your business and your family.
