Not long after I interviewed Aaron Lebauer for my podcast, he interviewed me for his website, and I have to say that I think this is one of the best interviews I’ve been involved with. Why? Because Aaron was very skillful in his questioning and had me talking about things I rarely talk/write about, and in much more detail than usual. I absolutely encourage you to visit his site but wanted to post the video here as well to make sure all those who aren’t currently following him can see it and hopefully add Aaron to your watch list (all the links we mention in this interview can be found there at: http://lebauerconsulting.com/interview-with-cash-based-physical-therapist-author-dr-jarod-carter/)
More specifically, I discuss these cash-based practice topics:
- I talk about my year as a private PT, traveling with a very successful couple, and the business lessons I learned from them.
- How I make a cash-practice work with very few direct physician referrals in a state without Direct Access.
- My best advice for having the most impact and success at networking events.
- Why I have a blog and podcast about the cash-based business model.
- The trends that are making the cash-based business model more and more viable over time.
- The 15-second elevator pitch I use to describe my PT Practice to prospective patients/referral sources
- And much much more.

Great conversation Aaron and Jarod!! I am looking to open a cash based practice geographically distant from my existing insurance based pvt practice. Loads of good advice. Thanks for taking the time.
Thanks Shankar, and best of luck with your new cash practice!!
Thanks Shankar! I appreciate your compliment. Good luck with your new practice!
Loved the interview! The piece on Direct Access was great…I feel like that is something our legislators need to hear–if we (as a country) are trying to lower health-care costs, why wouldn’t Direct Access be at the top of the list in terms of getting people the care they need with as little red tape and expense as possible?!
Keep up the great work!
Couldn’t agree more, Tom! Glad you enjoyed the interview
Thank you Jarod and Aaron!!! You have both inspired me to open my cash based practice. I opened in July and love being able to practice the way I have longed to since the beginning of my career. The information you gave is great. I live in NC and one of my big goals is to get the word out there that quality PT is key. In the area I live, I usually hear from people that their first thought, if injured, is to go to a chiropractor. I truly hope to offer through example and education what PT’s can do. No disrespect to chiropractors but so many people don’t know the skills that PT’s use daily.
That’s great news Lisa! Congratulations on your new practice and on creating the freedom to treat patients the way YOU feel is best, not influenced by insurance companies.
Thanks Lisa! 🙂
Almost anywhere, the 1st page of a Google search for “Back Pain” is dominated by Chiropractors. They do marketing right. Over time, more people will know to come see you 1st. Yes it is amazing that in NC we’ve had Direct Access for over 25 years, maybe 30 now, and still very few people know they can see a PT without a referral.
Congratulations and good luck in your practice.
