Most practice owners who start their practice as a side hustle, don’t struggle because it’s not a good model/approach. They struggle because it when it really starts working, and they don’t know when they can safely stop splitting their time, cast away the employment safety net, and do a cannonball into full-time practice ownership. (I used to be a springboard diver so I’m always pumped when I can make a diving reference)

In this episode, you’ll hear a real conversation inside my Mastermind with a practice owner who hit her first five-figure month while still only working part-time in her side hustle. We walk through the deciding factors and numbers to look at to help make the decision of: when it’s time to let go of the side job and go all in?

And as a wonderful bonus in this episode, two other Mastermind members share their story of starting out, in very difficult circumstances, and give added advice and inspiration I think everyone out there should hear.

P.S. If this conversation and the advice and support this practice owner received resonates with you, I’ve got something special for you this weekend…  If you want real-time coaching, support, and feedback from me and a group of Cash-Based practice owners who are building and growing alongside you, click here to join the Cash-Based Practice Mastermind. What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • How to know if your side hustle is ready to become your full-time practice
  • Why revenue alone is not the only number that matters
  • How to evaluate the real risk of leaving your side job
  • Why staying part-time can become the thing holding you back
  • What other practice owners experienced after finally going all in

The Moment Most Owners Misread

A five-figure month is exciting, and it should absolutely be celebrated. But the real question is not just whether you had one great month. The better question is whether your current numbers show that the business is already capable of supporting you, even before you give it your full attention.

In this conversation, the practice owner was already close to the weekly visit volume she needed to feel comfortable financially. And she was doing that with a limited schedule. That changes the decision because it means the practice was not just showing promise. It was already proving itself inside a very constrained container.

When you realize that, the question shifts from “Can this work?” to “What could this become if I stopped splitting my time?

The Safety Net Is Often Stronger Than You Think

One of the biggest fears in going full-time is losing the security of the other job. That fear is real, and it should not be dismissed. But it also needs to be examined honestly.

In many healthcare fields, especially right now, the fallback option is still very strong. If you needed to pick up work again, could you? Could you contract with an agency, take part-time work, or find another clinical role quickly?

For almost all clinicians these days, the answer is ‘yes.’

That does not mean you should be reckless. It means the risk may not be as permanent or catastrophic as your brain makes it feel. When you know you have a realistic backup plan, the decision becomes less about blind courage and more about making a calculated move.

Why Staying Part-Time Can Become the Bottleneck

At a certain point, the side job stops being a safety net and starts becoming a ceiling. You might still feel protected by it, but it is also taking time, energy, and focus away from the business you actually want to grow.

That was one of the most powerful parts of this episode. Other Mastermind members jumped in and shared that their practices did not really take off until they finally left the other job. Not because they magically became better clinicians overnight, but because they finally had the time to market, follow up, build relationships, create workshops, answer calls, and think like a business owner.

Going full-time creates the space needed for the business to become what it was already trying to become.

The Question Is Not “Do I Feel Ready?”

Feeling ready is a terrible filter because most practice owners never feel fully ready. There is always another reason to wait, another month to watch the numbers, or another scenario to worry about.

A better filter is: what do the numbers say, what capacity do I currently have, and what would change if I had more time to work on the business?

If you already know how many visits you need each week, and you are already close to that number while working part-time, that is useful data. If your schedule is filling, your demand is growing, and your backup income options are realistic, then the decision becomes much clearer.

You still have to make the leap. But it is not a leap without information.

The Final Word

Going full-time is not only a financial decision. It is a commitment decision.

There is a point where waiting longer feels safe, but actually delays the growth that is already within reach. If the numbers are close, the demand is building, and your fallback options are real, then staying half in may become the bigger risk.

You do not need perfect certainty. You need enough evidence to make a smart decision and enough commitment to give the business the chance it has earned.

And regardless of the phase of business you’re currently in: Don’t go it alone! The best way to accelerate your path toward your goals is to learn from those who’ve already successfully accomplished the things you’re pushing toward.
